Church of San Damiano
San Damiano Sanctuary
The Church of San Damiano, located a short distance from the center of Assisi, is one of the most famous sanctuaries in the city. Surrounded by nature and with spectacular views of the surroundings, this church was built between the seventh and ninth centuries and is dedicated to San Damiano, a doctor and martyr.
The Church of San Damiano also has a strong connection with St. Francis and St. Clare. This is the place where, according to tradition, Christ spoke with St. Francis and where the Saint wrote part of the Canticle of the Creatures. In addition, St. Clare founded the order of the Poor Clares here and performed miracles.
